Prezi in HTML5

I hate to say it but lack of HTML5 embed is a dealbreaker for me. I was seriously thinking about signing up for a Pro account but not being able to view an embedded Prezi on an Ipad or iPhone made me hold off.

Any plans on rollout? Is it in the pipeline or just under consideration?

I think moving to HTML5 would also help with accessibility issues, but I'm still researching that. Using prezi instead of ppt means we have to also produce the ppt anyway, because prezi isn't accessible and we're required by law to make an accessible version available at the same time. So if HTML5 is more accessible, that would be a huge help!

we have no plan for this. Sorry. It will be available on android since it has flash support.

Screenreaders can parse a prezi, can they?

My colleagues have been in touch with you with a list of accessibility problems, I'm sure I could have them send the correspondence on again if you like.

html5 would not solve the problem alone. I guess we need a transcript of the prezi -> texts in the order of path. You know in a PPT the transcript is a simple question.Slide by slide and text from top to the bottom. But how can we do this in prezi?

What a brilliant idea. Didn't even occur to me that my iPod can't view it and I'm frustrated now I've realised.

I hate apple but I think HTML5 would make it more efficient with loading of media, which would be very important with large media.

html5 would be faster in chrome.

maybe an autodetect feature? as in when you open a prezi to edit, it detects if your browser is standards-compliant to html5?

As of recently, Adobe has announced they will only release flash for Linux on Chrome. This is a HUGE problem. many people simply do not have the computing power to run Chrome while running other programs, which many people do have to run for productivity. Also, html5 would smooth out such things as copy & paste. And yes, while it is a lot of work, and Internet Explorer (meh) does not support it, it would make it run a lot smoother, and it would be easier to implement customization. We can already see how much more effiecient html5 has already been for Youtube.

Not to toot my own horn, but yesterday I made Awwation, an 'HTML5' Prezi-like app yesterday: Link

Presentations are SVG documents and animated using Javascript.
The editor is very unpolished since I have a lot of schoolwork to do and not enough time. :P
Presentations can be viewed out of the box in any browser, but the editor works best only in chrome.

Some notes (since this topic is about technology, may go into technical details!):

HTML5 prezis would be good for:

1. Accessibility - in the sense that stuff like chrome's inbuilt translator can translate content in the presentation on-the-fly just like anything else in the webpage. And other things.

2. Event handling - I don't know about flash but animations done by javascript have the advantage that events can be thrown during points in the animation timeline. This means that a transcript/description/summary can be displayed beside the presentation and this content can change depending on the time frame. Third-party developers can think of other wonderful things if the flash/webpage barrier is broken. Oh, and one could implement a progressbar! :P

3. Embedding in webpages - This is obvious, and obviously good for iOS devices so that you don't have to open a whole app for viewing some content.

4. Flash really is dying - Yes, it's not there on iOS devices, but now for Linux users (like me), it is only going to be available on Chrome. Sad. :(

Why Prezi still uses flash (my thoughts):

1. Technology - Current browser implementations of standards are sadly still inconsistent across browsers. SVG is a natural choice for prezi-like presentations, but the rendering tends to differ. For example, in Awwation, you can see that the fonts look different across different browsers. Even when you ignore that, it's just not 'fast-enough' yet.

2. Lack of suitable libraries - SVG is what one would pick for creating zooming vector presentations, but it's not fast enough. The HTML5 canvas is a like a 'bitmap buffer' and super super fast, but it cannot handle vector graphics easily because the API is too 'low-level' and you don't get a DOM like SVG. There are some projects like fabric.js that try to provide a DOM-like structure on top of Canvas, but such projects are not 'there yet'. :)

So that's why Prezi still insists on going with Flash. It just works., and is consistent.
But I think it is a good idea to start working on it now. :)

Hi Aditya, Great Job!. As a worried prezi lover (and advanced user), I expect that Prezi company hire you to help them to develop the new version of of the tool without flash needed.

I would be very pleased about a HTML5-based Prezi, too. Just right now I am using prezi to prepare a HTML5 talk presentation. It would be great if i could say: "... this presentation is done using HMTL5 technology ... and prezi".

It's weird to me that the company is not responding to this thread more directly. That is not a good sign.

With Android Jellybean dropping flash support, and Adobe saying they will no longer update it after 15th August surely this topic, which is over TWO years old, deserves some kind of official response. I've been using Prezi on and off for a few years now and it's come to the point where the product is refined and stable enough for me to start to build some serious offerings that I could resell to clients, BUT unless I know there is a roadmap for HTML5 compatibility I can't invest my time and money into that, nor can I recommend it to clients.

I'd love using Prezi embeds as an alternative to video to get a company message across but without HTML5 it means converting it to video again and losing all the interactivity that comes with it. I think if they create an HTML5 version we'll start seeing Prezi's replacing website home page banners. Which is good for them and good for me!

I would also love to see prezi move to HTML5. The cross platform compatibility and flexibility would be awesome.

This thread is absurd. We all just sit around wishing Prezi would go there, but they never reply and I see no evidence they care. Move along folks, there's nothing to see here. This outfit is going to keep rearranging deck chairs on the HMS Flash as it sinks into the ocean.

This is a trend to replace Flash-based apps with what is called "HTML5".

Big "+" is that it's totally cross-platform and does not require any additional installations. Seeing how flash player crashes each time I now understand how right Apple was by not supporting it.

Just made my first prezi. Loved the process. Signed up for Prezi Pro trial based on that. But now I dont think I will continue with a paid subscription beyond the trial.

Very disappointed to see no HTML5 publish/export option. I'm trying to give better/flashier presentations to prospective clients. These are people who travel frequently and often just bring ipads or android tablets to meetings at remote sites.

I'm sorry, but asking prospective clients to download an iPad app to view my presentation is not acceptable from a sales perspective. My sales pitch should not require tech support.

So no HTML5 is a dealbreaker for me. Shame.

Thankfully to this topic, I found out there are other graphical tools such Sozi (very good idea of using Inkscape, it includes even better tools to make nice art) and Stut (graphical authoring tool for impress.js). Also Awwation of Aditya Bhatt is a nice project/experiment.
Additionally, those tools are open source, which can't be said of Prezi.

Flash is getting old, is proprietary, does not allow to use OpenGL/WebGL at a low enough level, the world is becoming more open (social networks, increasing usage of Linux, putrefaction of Windows, ...)
So Prezi, HTML5 might be just the solution, and Aditya Bhatt provided a nice starting point.

LOL. This is like ground hog day. Every six months someone logs in and says, WTF? And the Prezi people never respond. I think a wicked witch turned them all to stone. Heaven knows who keeps paying to keep up this website.

Unfortunately I dont think you've clarified your position very well.

Android tablet market share is growing and set to hit 60%. Apple's tablet share is dropping. There is no official Android client for Prezi.

The number of people who can view Prezi presentations is *dropping*.

Your statement implies that HTML5 does not give the performance you need versus native apps. I'm sure your aware of the recent developments regarding WebGL and the direction the WebKit teams are moving in for 3D accelerated graphics. Asm.js and the Unreal engine demonstrate a full 3D gaming engine in the web.

Granted, this technology is new, but if Mozilla and Webkit (Apple and Google) are moving in this web-centric direction, I'm interested to know why Prezi is going in the opposite direction.

Without true web and mobile support I can not use Prezi in the enterprise. Luckily, your competitors *are* moving in this HTML5 direction, so on the plus side, you'll not be bothered by these types of pleas in the future.

Enough! Never seen so stubbornly people focused on technological suicide. The technical team of Prezi reminds me Steve Wozniak, with its inexplicable stubbornness in keeping your BASIC aesthetically wonderful, but without floating-point support. What happened? Jobs tired and turned to Bill Gates to build it and Steve Wozniak hung up his boots and took with him his puritan and useless BASIC.
