if they are aligned and played next to each other, the motion is minimal...

you can use shift+move, shift+rotate to align them nicely...

I think Marty brings up a good point. Though Prezi's zooming method seems superior to traditional presentions most of the time, I think there are situations where traditional presentation techniques are appropriate.

For example, if I have a series of images to present that are all equal in their heirarchy (no reason for one to be larger than the other) and I want there to be a heading that stays above them, I'm not sure I want to have the same heading keep zooming into place.

Another scenario would be if I again have a large number of images equal in heirarchy (no header this time) that want to be grouped together within a larger presentation. On a macro level, I might want them arranged either in a grid or a less rigid cluster (esp. the latter), but to navigate between I might prefer a more consistent animation, like you'd get if they were in a straight line (or no anim at all). But again, a line might not work on the macro level.

Maybe I'm just stuck in traditional presentation mode, but I think this could be an issue for getting into market segments that would frown more on "seasickness" than perhaps a designer or other creative individual.

Hmmm...dangerously close to PPT. I agree it could be nice, but rather than change in place, something else (?!) that won't remind us of what it took us sooo long for us to finally give up(PPT)!
I had a bunch of motion in mine too--but I adjusted my images to make in minimal. It worked better.

i love prezi - but the motion sickness can be a problem. I know 2 very prominent trainers who have stopped using prezi because their audience have complained about the queesiness they experienced (and it wasnt the content!).

I want to keep using prezi and I think there is some changes that must be possible to make the movements less dizzying. Also, I think helping us (the users) with some best usage guidelines to minimize dizziness would also be good.

I like prezi and think it's a great idea. I wouldn't use it for long presentations however because the motion is sickenning for many people. It's ok for short presentations. I would use powerpoint if you want to show hiearchy and because people can better remember motionless images. But if you want to add interest to your meeting with a short presentation then use prezi. In prezi you get too caught up in the motion and forget what it is about.

thanks for you feedback. It's important critique. Can you point me the a good powerpoint which shows hierarchy? I would like to see how I could convert it to prezi and see the difference.

I also think ppt is better sometimes than prezi. But want to understand the situation and work on it.

What I mean with hierarchy is you can clearly see the Main title, the subtitle and bullied points at the same time etc. and how they relate to each other. With prezi you see main title and then you slide in between and get lost a little. Some could find it harder to follow.

Yes, it's good! Nevertheless I still see it clearer in the powerpoint (it's more organized) even though it looks better in prezi. I like the way you did the main title and subtitle psychologist underneath which is way better than as a bullet in PPT and studied is fine. However, the rest of the information is a bit spread across and I am a bit confused how it relates. (bit of text here, bit of text there..) The tiny text is there but I don't see the relationship ..what it belongs to.

In the powerpoint I can see just by the size of the bullet instantly ah this is under this title etc. Is prezi against bullet points?

By the way, our lecturer is a big fan of prezi, yet his presentations are still a slideshow. I wonder why? Perhaps I need to ask him.

thank you for sharing your thoughts here. Motion can sometimes help people understanding a concept or idea (for instance zooming in to details inherently communicates the fact that it's a detail). There are many examples like this in Prezi where the spatial movements are meaningful. There are also some other times where motion is not meaningful. So this is where we could improve Prezi by giving more control over motion and transitions.

What are the things you miss more from powerpoint-like softwares? for instance I do miss the ability to have objects "appearing" beside each other.

It would be a great help if you could share some of the things you like to do in slide based softwares and CAN'T in prezi.

Probably bullets points are not of any help in this.

You are too general and talk about 'some', I am talking about a concrete example, where bullets would work better. And I have seen an example Prezi presentation where bullets were used.

Anyway, that's my opinion and understanding. As I said I am not against Prezi, I like Prezi.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend neither want to say that bullet points are never useful. Just wanted to highlight that I think they're a separate question. To answer your question, indeed you can create bullet points in a prezi, using the text editor (small icon on the top right)

I haven't seen any lecturers using Prezi yet. Only one keeps mentioning it telling us to use it but doesn't do so himself. Perhaps you want to target educational establishments more. I think there you would have a great market.

Also many lecturers probably don't have the time to convert the number of presentations/slideshow based lectures they had created over period of time into Prezi's. Then there is the question of motion sickness again. In larger groups people are more likely to complain about it. (We are talking 90+ students.) How about making the speed adjustable?

Have you considered creating a program that would convert PPT into Prezi? I believe creating a Prezi demands a lot of time and a lot of lecturers are just used to their slideshows. These lectures are usually 2 hours long which means a lot of extra work for them.

Part of the motion sickenss or strain on my eyes comes from when the motion isn't smooth and creates these jagged lines instead of smooth ones. It's hard to explain in words. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I'm definitely a big fan and have used prezi for several medical presentations. There are 3 big issue I've been having

1) transition speeds - it would definitely be better to be able to control the speed of transitions from one "area" or "frame" to another. Perhaps add the ability to use Zebra to control speed of transitions while in the "Path" section. Right now, when in the Path section, you can see all the different paths, but you can't control the speed of the path. That would be really nice

2) zooming during transitions - when zoomed in on a specific "area" or "frame", I want to move to another area of similar degree of zoom. However, the transition zooms way out, then moves over to the new area/frame, and then zooms in again. It would be nice to maintain same level of zoom during transitions and just move across the presentation area. Being able to control transition speeds would also make this a non-issue. I really think we the user needs to be able to control path/transition speeds.

3) sometimes, I need to maintain the same title but show 7 or 8 photos back-to-back-to-back .. in succession. (i am showing several frames of a patient xray). Almost like a movie frame. Right now, you can't do this without zooming or moving around. PPT allows for this to happen and is why I still use it for presentations that I need to show many photos in succession.

All in all, I really like Prezi but I think there are a few changes that are needed before it really catches on. Transition/path speed is likely the #1 issue. When projecting presentations on a large screen for a large class, the fast speed can be very distracting for the students.

thank you very much for your comment. That's exactly what I think. I cannot but support your three "big" issues. As soon as I recognized how distracted and motion sick my students were, I stopped using prezi alltogether. Motion speed is a big issue since years and prezi didn't came up with any intelligent solution til now.

Just using Prezi for the first time, like everyone else I am impressed. However, like a lot of people the zoom speed and zooming in and out is too much for a longer presentation.

Peter Halacsy (Head of Product) 1 year ago wrote that the camera speed could be reduced. However there has not been any follow up on this that I have been able to find.

Like many others, I think this could be a killer for Prezi being accepted by a wider market. Even the option of an "instant" transition to the next slide would be very helpful. This would also allow reserving the zoom function for maximum effectiveness.

When I saw Prezi it was love at first sight. Ever since I've been trying to use it when possible but me too I have the problem of too much motion. Having the possibility to have elements that overlap completely would be great.

A question though. If it's not possible, as everyone says, how did they do it here???

I'm starting to use Prezi and I am not impressed at all. The giant pasteboard is confusing, and things get lost and sizes (type,photos) become inconsistent.

I have a lot of photos that need to be shown (project photos) and the stuff gets spread over too large an area to be able to keep track of it on my computer screen.

Also, I need to do org charts. It's a pain to create graphics in Prezi.

Oh,and the swooping really makes me nauseous. I really want to use this, but I'm not sure it's an improvement over PPT.

Unless timing issues are greatly improved, I won't be recommending Prezi for presentations. Not only is the current timing dizzying, but it distracts from the messages being presented.

Also, considering the amount of time that Prezi has been on the market, it's hard to believe that these issues have not been resolved.

I came to this topic through a google search on how to minimize the amount of motion sickness that can occur with longer prezis. I like the fact that I can lay out large amounts of information on it's limitless canvas, but getting around it is even making me sick while watching the transitions from one element of the presentation to another.

I saw that this thread started as a discussion on minimizing the motion sickness, but devolved into whether or not prezi is good or not.

Are there any strategies for limiting the amount of movement on these presentations?
