How can I be sure my data erased after Prezi has to convert my videos to Flash?

Can anyone please tell me a little bit more about how the data is erased when Prezi needs to connect to the server in order to connect to Flash? This is described under the the "known issues" section of the prezi desktop support page, but I'd like to know more about how the data is erased so I can make a more informed decision on whether I need to hunt down a video converter. It is video data that I am presenting in my dissertation, and so I don't want it to end up online and yet don't want to risk downloading any viruses along with a "free movie converter," especially since I don't know which ones to trust. (SPECS I'm using Prezi desktop3, v. 3.070. I don't think this question is specific to my platform, but just in case I am on a Mac, running OS X 10.6.8) Thanks for your help!

  • Hey there Luke,

When things are erased on a hard drive, the binary is reversed. So for example, 10101 turned to 01010 and therefore the data is gone. Once you delete a Prezi we cannot recover it.

If you have Prezi Desktop, you will not be at risk of your information going online. One of the many benefits of using such a program is the privacy it allows. The online time that Prezi Desktop needs to be online is during the initial installation to authenticate the license. Then it works all offline. *NOTE: any YouTube videos will need an active internet connection to work.

Furthermore, although a virus is possible, it is extremely unlikely on a mac. This is why they make antivirus for the mac. If you are extremely concerned, I would consider getting a copy of the software for your own peace of mind.

I would encourage you to let our servers do the converting for your video. I explained the deleting process above. To convert your video you could also try zamzar: www.zamzar.com

Good luck with your dissertation and happy zooming!

    Regards,
    Alex
