About recent spam attacks

Dear Prezi Community,

Just wanted to let you guys know that we are just as unhappy with the recent spam situation as you are. There are hundreds of malicious topics in our community forum that seriously affect valuable communication.

Let me give you an update on the situation:

1. The Prezi support team works hard to report, suspend and delete spam content from our discussion forum pages. This effort has some temporary results but we cannot keep the forums clean by manual work.

2. Thus we have a live channel to the developer team at Get Satisfaction. They let us know that they are now working on cutting the flow of junk content at the source, their engineering team is working on a solution to prevent an attack like this from recurring in the future.

Since Get Satisfaction is a web based service, we are pretty much in the same shoes as you all. We are users here ourselves too. What we can do is to update you regularly about the situation, and wait for a hopefully quick solution delivery from the GetSat team.

Hi guys,

I help moderate as a champ mod for a few communities including the main Getsat area and the developer site.
Unfortunately my power stops there but if you have any extra mod seats I'd be happy to look in when I look at the other communities just for spam here.
Ive seen some huge effort by the Getsat employees deleting and banning spammers on their week ends and time off but as I'm in Australia the time differences might help.
You can contact Caty or any other employee to get my email if you decide you need an extra hammer.

Hmmm... Spam is still abundant on this forum.
How about letting (existing?) champions on this forum combat spam? In that way, people who in the past have demonstrated to have a positive influence on this forum, can hide/remove the spam at times when no prezi team member is present.
I would imagine that 'removed account' and/or removed posts would be viewable by the prezi team, which could be interpreted as a catch for any abuse of the 'moderation' by the champions...

I realize any solution from the GetSat team is nice & handy, and that both prezi team and GetSat have been very active in dealing with the spam, but perhaps all it takes is that little extra exposure/presence of spam-killing-people to stop the spam attacks on this forum, perhaps enough for them to move on (or move out of business, allthough that is less likely).

Roel I couldn't agree with you more in terms of opening up spam fighting to more than admins. We are currently coming up with the best way to do this because ever sharp weapon has two edges. Trust me that we and I personally (hating spam as I do) pay attention to our communit and our users in other communities so keep the ideas coming. It is nice to see that our thoughts on how to deal with spam mirror the sentiments here.

Hello Everyone,

I agree with Roel, if champions could help combat spam I know I could stop most of them, I am subscribed as an email receiver for whenever a new post is made, and if there was a spam post I would get rid of it once I can, which would be almost immediately at times. I'm sure the other champions are also email subscribed and would be able to help everyone along with me to combat all of the spam in this forum.

Let's try to make this forum better.

Hey guys!! Thanks for voicing your concern. This spam issue is a problem. We have spoken with the people at GetSat and although difficult, they are trying to help us with the spam issue and eventually get rid of it for good.

I like the idea to let our Champions help delete the spam as it comes, but I don't think this would be possible as we would have to give permission for all Champions to delete any topic/post/thread. I'm not sure, but I can talk with our team about it.

Again, thanks for being so concerned. I will definitely speak to my colleagues about this.

As far as I know, any topic/post/thread 'deleted' is still searchable/seeable by someone with the right permissions (e.g. the prezi team)...
I cannot imagine any champion risking his/her status on this forum for personal vendetta's, as surely any such deletion could be monitored/checked later for abuse (on e.g. slashdot this is done through meta-moderation, perhaps a bit overdoing it for a GetSat forum)?
A daily/weekly review of 'deleted' accounts should be achievable by the prezi team, and would eradicate any abuse.

P.S. Stopping spammers through stopping threads is limited; I guess making user accounts is that cumbersome, that a spammer usually makes many posts from a single account. Hence blocking an account for posting (further) comments is a necessary/requested feature...
